Review: The Valiant

A Surprisingly good read! Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt team up to write a battle-royale featuring the all-star team of characters that has established the Valiant publishing house. The great art by Paolo Rivera doesn’t hurt either.
Basically, the plot surrounds saving the world. Sounds kinda ho-hum and typical, except that it chronicles the failings of Gilad, the Eternal Warrior to protect the Geomancer throughout history. This time, Gilad enlists the help of Bloodshot, Ninjak, Armstrong, X-O Manowar, and the gangs at MI-6 and G.A.T.E. to protect the newest Geomancer from the threat of The Immortal Enemy.
Normally in these kinds of books the pandering exposition explaining who everyone is becomes annoying, but Lemire and Kindt do a pretty good job bringing newbies up to speed without alienating veteran readers.
Our discovery of the characters is plot driven, rather than imposed by chatter; the Immortal Enemy’s abilities are primarily psychology-based, so we learn a lot about each team member by the weaknesses he uses to exploit them.
As Kay, the rookie Geomancer faces up against him, he takes the form of Mr Flay, a character from her favorite childhood fairytale. Lemire dusts off his pencils to draw the flashbacks that detail her terror and fascination with the persona who haunted her nightmares and now threatens the world. The contrast in artistic styles suits the story-within-a-story and is a nice bonus for Lemire fans.
As each member clashes with the Immortal Enemy the reader is rewarded with a glimpse into the fears and gears that make each tick. The overall arc, like the Valiant team, proves that the sum of the parts is greater the whole.
The graphic novel which collects the complete four issue epic is also filled with extra sketches and artist commentary which provides some interesting insight into the creation of this story. It also includes a gallery of cool covers by Lemire, Kindt, and Francavilla.
A story 10,000 years in the making. Worth the wait, and at only $12.99, the bargain of the century.Tweet
